1989一念間 Back to 1989 Welcome to 2016 Episode 17 Behind the Scenes Translations

I'll only be translating Marcus and Ivy's interactions in this episode (If I get more time, I may go back to translate the other bits with Mini Tsai). Hehe, Iby and Marcus are just too cute together...And they both answer the question of which kiss they enjoyed in the series and why....

1. Shooting the Scene where Zhen Zhen asks Chen Che to feel her heart [1:38-2:38]
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, hugs Marcus, as Chen Che
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Listen!
She pulls Chen Che's hand up to her chest
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: My heart is now still beating very fast...

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Do you feel it?
-Cuts to in between takes-
Director: Good. Ok.
Ivy to the director: Me, putting it (Chen Che's hand) like this...is it a bit strange?
Director: How did you put it just then?
Ivy grabs Marcus' hand and pulls it sort of onto her chest, just under her neck.
Ivy: I put it like this

Director [Purple captions with megaphone]: Is the palm of the hand on the front of your chest a bit?

Ivy grins sheepishly [Yellow caption]: A little bit

Director teasing: What are you afraid of?
Crew member laughs
Director: Then we'll do one more (shot), ok?
Ivy: Ok
Director to Ivy: You...the whole of the palm of this hand put it on the front of your chest, it doesn't matter.
Ivy laughs awkwardly: Oh...
Marcus grins a bit awkwardly too
[Blue caption on Marcus: Dumbfounded/Astonished]

Ivy moves Marcus' hand: So it's like this?
Director: In a moment, I still have to film a close-up
Ivy, adjusting Marcus' hand on her chest: Ok, ok...like this?
Ivy, still moving the hand down a bit: Like this?
Director: Correct
Ivy: Looking at this, it's ok.
Director: Ok. Good.
Ivy puts Marcus' hand down sheepishly. They put two red blush circles on Ivy's cheeks.
[Blue caption: This really makes people shy!]

-Cuts to the re-filming of the scene-
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: My heart is now still beating very fast...
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Do you feel it?
[Blue caption moving across the screen: Being like this, in front of everyone, for your heart not to be beating very fast, that would be very hard indeed]
[Red and white thinking bubble caption on Marcus: Actually, mine is beating even faster (than yours)]

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: When I think of Aunty's reaction, my heart rate just increases.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: What if Aunty still wants Ya Juan to let go of her child?
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Then what should we do?!

2. Which kiss did you enjoy the most? [8:12-9:44]

Montage of Christmas eve kiss, Christmas party kiss and Prawn kiss scenes

Ivy: I feel that the stolen kiss at Christmas was very cute.

Ivy: And then it had...It had a lot of feeling...Because I didn't know about the situation with the stolen kiss at Christmas. And then, the first actual kiss was at the party...At the party, when he kisses (me), actually...My feelings were very complicated.

Ivy: Because that day I still had to...I still had to consider how bad Xiao Long must be feeling.

Ivy:  And then Xiao Long was watching, eyes-wide, while Chen Che and I were kissing.

Ivy: And so, my feelings were very complicated....I was very happy, but also felt very sorry for my friend....That is, on the one side I have affection/ friendship...

Ivy laughing: And on the other side side I have love...that kind of a feeling

Ivy: And then, the following kiss, the prawn kiss, I feel like that's also very cute. Extremely sweet.

Ivy: That is, he really peeled a prawn for her to suddenly kiss (her), that kiss...felt like it melted the whole...the whole heart, that type of feeling. So I felt that sequence...I really liked it a lot. 

---In Chinese culture, you only peel a prawn for your loved ones like family members or lovers etc.---

-Cuts to Marcus and Ivy standing near the time-travel tunnel in their party outfits in between takes-

Marcus: My favourite is the feeding-prawn kiss.

Ivy grins: The feeding-prawn kiss....

Marcus: Right

Ivy in English [Yellow caption]: Why?

Marcus: Because I feel...

Ivy is grinning while she waits for an answer

Marcus: ...It's cute...

Marcus laughing: I feel like it's a bullying...bullying you type of feeling

[Blue caption: Che spirit is very naughty]

Ivy: You mean like tricking me?

Marcus grinning: Playing tricks on you...that is...right

-Cuts to further in the same conversation-

Ivy: I said my most favourite is that Christmas light one

Ivy: Because I feel that Christmas light one is very...

Marcus thoughtful: Christmas light...

Ivy: Although I don't know about it (as in her character)...

Marcus:...but you didn't know about it...

Ivy agrees: I didn't know about it, but..that is...

Ivy: There is a type of...

Ivy grins [Yellow caption with heart]: Secretly being loved feeling

Both Ivy and Marcus grin

Ivy, grins: It felt quite good

Marcus: Christmas lights...I also really liked that scene...

Marcus: When I was watching that scene myself...

Marcus: When I was watching the screening myself...

Marcus: My own heart rate...increased...that is (it went) bump-bump-bump...

Ivy is laughing on the side

Marcus, widening his eyes: I felt like a teenage girl...wanted to give a shrill scream..like this...

Marcus makes an exaggerated gasping face of excitement, making Ivy laugh out loud.

End of Translation. Ahhh! These two are super cute and can talk so comfortably about their kiss scenes. Adorable.

Heh. This Behind the Scenes video includes the cute kiss in the park between Chen Che and Zhen Zhen. Also, I love that the Director is consistently teasing Ivy and Marcus as they film that scene...

1. Filming Chen Che and Zhen Zhen's walk in the park [0:00-00:48]

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: You said it!

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: You won't easily say 'break up'

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: You promise!

Marcus, as Chen Che: Of course

Marcus, as Chen Che: Since when have I ever not done what I said I'd do?

Ivy gives a coy grin

[Blue caption with hearts: Hidden/ coy smile]

Marcus, as Chen Che, extends his hand out to Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, so she can hold it. 

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Oooh...
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, slips her hand into Chen Che's, hand.
Director [Dark blue caption]: You've misunderstood
Director [Dark blue and pink caption]: You owe me a hundred dollars!
Ivy bursts out laughing and hits Marcus lightly on the arm.
Ivy, with a laugh: This is our hindrance from the other day
-Cuts to Marcus, as Chen Che, reaching for Ivy, Zhen Zhen's hand-
Director: After holding hands...
Director: Ye Zhen Zhen sneaks a glance at him
Director: This time he has really taken the initiative to hold her hand
Director: Ok, so you two look down happily, and then...
The Director looks up.
[Blue caption: Look upwards!?]
-Cuts to Marcus and Ivy looking upwards-

The Director makes a tsking sound

Ivy [Pink and Yellow caption]: The Director is dating/ showing love to this environment
Ivy puts a finger to her lips and makes a shushing sound.
Ivy: Let's not bother them.

2. Filming Zhen Zhen and Chen Che's picnic kiss [00:49-3:34]
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, is sitting cross-legged, reading next to Marcus, as Chen Che, who is laying on a picnic rug and taking a nap. She turns, still cross-legged, to look down at his face.
Ivy [Yellow caption]: Wait a moment for me!
Ivy laughing [Black caption]: I've got a cramp in my leg
Ivy is semi-laughing, semi-crying: It really hurts!
Marcus looks up with a bit of a curious grin.
-Cuts to the two still in their positions, but Ivy stretching out her legs-
Ivy: It was too long. Just then I really wanted to hold it in...
Ivy: But...
She makes a little whimper
-Cuts to Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, laying down on Chen Che's arm and snuggling next to him-
Marcus, as Chen Che, looks contently as her.
[Blue caption: Through the park, the sound of an OK 'cut' sound bursts through] ?
Ivy: Chen Che
There is some singing in the background
Director [Blue and black caption]: Ahhh!
Ivy: They really are singing very loudly, Chen Che
Marcus: We’ll just all sing together, that’ll be good
Ivy: Did you hear it, Chen Che?
Marcus starts singing random sounds: La la la
Ivy: Chen Che, that singing addict
Ivy: He doesn’t have any way of hearing anyone singing in front of him
Ivy: He will just want to keep on singing
Ivy: Go on then…
Ivy: We’ll bet 10 dollars
-Cuts to Ivy and Marcus sitting on the picnic rug as their characters, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes-

3. Filming the scene where Chen Che celebrates all the special occasions with Zhen Zhen [6:09-7:05]
Marcus, as Chen Che, leads Ivy, as Zhen Zhen into his classroom.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, gives Marcus, as Chen Che, a kiss on the cheek.
[Pink caption with a heart: Chu!]
---This is a kissing sound by the way---
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: I don't have the time to be shy anymore
Director [Black and Dark blue caption]: Did you kiss?
Crew member [Dark blue caption with flying heart]: Yesss. There was a 'chu' sound.
All the crew members are laughing.
Ivy and Marcus can't help but break into grins...While looking at each other...
---I wonder if there's so much teasing going on because the cast and crew know they're actually going out....Just saying...---

Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: I don't have the time to be shy anymore
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, gives a shrug and closes her eyes.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Ok. I've closed my eyes now.
-Cuts to in between takes with Ivy and Marcus standing in the same positions-
The Director walks in and makes loud kissing 'Chu' sounds
[Dark blue captions: Chu! Chu!]
Ivy hears and laughs slapping the Director on the arm as he walks past.
Ivy, with a laugh: Ai You!
---Haha, it's the Asian grandma sound for disapproval---
Ivy turns to Marcus: This is very normal, right?
Marcus: That's right
---What are you guys referring to as 'being very normal'?? The kissing being normal because you're both actually going out...hahaha. No, really. I want to know.---
-Cuts to Marcus, as Chen Che, bringing out a birthday cake-
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, opens her eyes.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: This is...?
Without answering her, Marcus, as Chen Che, walks towards the desk and places the cake down.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, moves next to him.
Director: Cut!
Ivy makes a motion as if to blow out the candles...And then she actually does!
[Red caption with party poppers: Happy Birthday!]
Ivy, cheers cutely with a grin: Yeeeaaahhh!
Ivy: I was the first!
Ivy [Black and Yellow caption]: I'm done for! After blowing it, I'm 327 years old

4. Filming the scene where Zhen Zhen rushes in and hugs Chen Che with great force [9:12-9:44]
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: Where are you going?
Marcus, as Chen Che: Going to find grandpa
Marcus, as Chen Che: Ya Juan is pregnant
Marcus, as Chen Che: Whatever the case, I still need to notify him
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen, leaps up and hugs him tightly, worried.
Ivy, as Zhen Zhen: I want to go together with you
-Cut to Marcus answering a question posed to him by the reporter. Probably about how annoyed he might feel as Zhen Zhen is being clingy-

Magazine Scans: Jasper Liu 劉以豪 for the May issue of GQ Taiwan

Yaaasss. Why does Jasper always look amazing? He was the fashion shoot model for this month's issue of GQ Taiwan and got up to fun with some of his greatest friends - dogs :) I've included both the magazine pictures released by GQ Taiwan, as well as the actual magazine scans so you can bask in Jasper's cuteness.

Puff Kuo 郭雪芙 for the April issue of Vinge 文森

Partly like a fashion magazine and partly like an art book, Vinge has the most ethereal and feminine photo shoots. Puff looked extremely fitting in pastel backgrounds with hand-crafted paper flower gardens. I haven't been able to find any scans, but Puff herself provided some behind the scenes shots via Instagram.

1989一念間 Back to 1989 Fan Meet and SPOP 華流 Signing Translation Summary

I didn't attend this fan meet obviously. But I will be going back in time (haha) to do a translation summary for this fan meet. Translation Summary = A translation that is not a line-by-line translation, but will cover a large portion of the event :) I really love the dynamics between Mini Tsai, Marcus Chang and Ivy Shao...All those mother and son jokes made me laugh so much!

Picture Spam: 1989一念間 Back to 1989's Mini Tsai 蔡黃汝, Ivy Shao 邵雨薇 and Marcus Chang 張立昂 for SPOP 華流 May

These 3 are simply beautiful. So it's no surprise that they were called in to do a photo shoot together. Seeing as Back to 1989's story line revolves around the main character's strained relationship with his mother, as well as his blossoming relationship with a girl from 1989, it made perfect sense to have both Mini Tsai and Ivy Shao accompany Marcus Chang for the spread. The three had perfect chemistry as you'll see (if you haven't already) in the SPOP behind the scenes video.

With these vintage print outfits and backdrops, these photos are a big improvement on previous SPOP shoots. It's great to see the magazine head towards a more natural photo shoot direction - away from just coloured backdrops. Although I've been late to order a copy, and late in posting about it, I am looking forward to receiving my copy of this issue!

SPOP 華流 Magazine Update: 1989一念間 Back to 1989 SPOP 華流 May issue out now!

The beautiful trio of Marcus Chang, Ivy Shao and Mini Tsai have been gracing the cover of the May issue for a month now...In fact it's pretty much coming to the June issue of SPOP. They also already did a fan meet and an SPOP signing for this issue.I'm sad that I couldn't go, but I will translate the live streaming video of the fan meet on this blog, as well as the behind the scenes video for this photo shoot. Anyway, I thought I'd share the marketing collateral for the May SPOP, which also included additional Bromance posters.
